Soprano Renée Fleming and award-winning Nashville novelist Ann Patchett will bring their powerful voices together later this month for the Nashville Symphony’s “In Conversation.”The women will discuss creating characters, music, Patchett’s novel “Bel Canto,” Fleming’s opera based on the novel, and more.Published in 2008, “Bel Canto” is about an American opera singer who is among a group of business leaders held hostage in South America.Although the two women had not met at the time Patchett was writing the book, Fleming’s voice helped inspire the main character, Roxanne Coss.

Fleming is working with Lyric Opera of Chicago to commission the real-life opera, which will premier in the 2015/16 season. Before and after the lecture, guests can purchase signed copies of Fleming’s autobiography, “The Inner Voice: The Making of a Singer.”

Fans of Fleming also can catch her performance Sept. 21 at the symphony’s Season Opening Gala. The show begins at 8 p.m. After the concert, attendees can enjoy complimentary champagne and dessert. Tickets are $50-$138.

“In Conversation” begins at 7 p.m. Sept. 20 in the Schermerhorn’s Laura Turner Concert Hall, One Symphony Place. The event is free, but attendees must have a ticket. To get tickets, visitwww.nashvillesymphony.org or call 615-687-6400.
